Boats
Boat from sternNarrowboats
really are a special breed of boat. They are narrow and tight, long and heavy and the narrowboats hold within them all sorts of surprises. The great news is that ALL of our Narrowboats have been given Four Stars through the recognised industry grading programme. That's a pretty good start, isn't it?

With strong emphasis on light and space, the carefully considered design and layout combines our experience together with the fantastic feedback derived from our existing guests over the years. This formula has created a superbly appointed and truly comfortable boat come rain or shine - the perfect vehicle for your great escape.
The four-burner hob, grill and oven are all gas operated and for those of you unfamiliar with this form of domestic energy, don’t panic. There is a microwave too!
Be aware that beds can often be smaller or narrower than at home though the master bedroom in each of our boats has a very large double bed.
If you want to slow right down, get away from all the commotion in the world, prefer wearing your casual clothes or, as this is England, your waterproofs and you have that special spark and spirit of adventure.... well, this is the holiday for you.
The point with both the electricity and the water is that you can only draw out what you put in! Suddenly, all our assumptions that there is always water and the lights will always work are thrown out of the window. On these narrowboat holidays, you need to make sure that they do by, at the risk of sounding melodramatic, managing your own space and environment..
For your information, all toilet waste is flushed into a holding tank built into the hull of the narrowboat. Generally, there is enough volume within the tank for one week. However, if the tank fills to capacity during your holiday, it is your responsibility to arrange a 'pump - out'. This facility is available throughout the canal system and like the freshwater points are shown on the supplied map..
The service varies in cost though if you budget for about £15.00, you will be fairly close to the mark. Luggage space is at a premium and we suggest that you bring as little as possible and folding canvas or nylon bags are best. Avoid bulky suitcases at all costs. Bring flat shoes, trainers and wellington boots if you can. Try to plan your arrival and do your main shop for supplies prior to check - in.
Many guests tend to eat at least one meal a day at a canalside pub. Food tends to be good and wholesome and in the main, reasonably priced. Breakfast is the main on board meal for many whilst on the boating holiday so do think about stocking up on eggs, mushrooms, cheese, milk, bread, cereal etc as well as lots of snacks for the day. The captain and crew will always welcome a mug of soup or a cup of tea!
You may wish to use the marina as a base or mix and match land based exploration with some cruising. You are welcome! You choose what best suits your holiday needs. Bring your favourite CDs and DVDs. Canalside pubs are great places to eat and relax while downing a refreshing glass of good ale. If you prefer your own cooking, there is a grill, oven, four burner hob and even a microwave.
Expect a warm welcome from the friendly staff at Sawley. Their knowledge and advice will be invaluable and they’ll patiently teach you all that they are able about getting the best out of your canalboat holiday.. Set out on your cruise, brimming with excitement and confidence. Our narrowboats are instantly recognised on the waterways with their winning combination of friendly colours and happy holiday crew.
